Serving up bespoke joinery for tennis-inspired courtyard at WOW!House

The Garden Trellis Co collaborate with Katharine Pooley and McKinnon and Harris for tennis-inspired courtyard at WOW!House.

Taking place throughout June at Design Centre Chelsea Harbour in London, WOW!house is a one-of-a-kind showhouse stretching 500 sq m. Featuring 19 full-size rooms and outdoor spaces — each one is uniquely designed by world-class interior designers, working in collaboration with globally recognised design brands and incredible suppliers.

We were asked by luxury interior designer Katharine Pooley to craft bespoke joinery for the McKinnon and Harris Courtyard. Drawing on her passion for tennis, Katharine Pooley has created a quintessentially British Summer experience and our traditional trellis is a (game, set) match made in heaven.

We discovered many shared values with Katharine Pooley and her team including a commitment to the best quality products and sustainable practices. Katharine said, “Crafted by hand at their workshop on the Essex coast, I was absolutely thrilled when the team came on board. It has been heaven to work with a supplier who just understands the classical English garden aesthetic and is locally made in England.”

The four bespoke joinery elements

The decorative trellis-work includes bespoke arches with CNC circle details made from Tricoya and Thermally Treated Timber and painted in Farrow & Ball Wimbourne White.

Alongside the arches are bespoke diagonal trellis panels with decorative arched tops made from Thermally Treated Timber painted white with everlasting roses climbing up the trellis from &tomorrow.

Classic painted tongue and groove panels and a large pergola-type structure made from Western Red Cedar with a stained finish help to enclose the space and give the feel of a sports pavilion.

The courtyard also features silk wallpaper by Fromental, hand-painted with botanical scenes. A bespoke Colbourns Tennis Court Carpet bathes the space underfoot. McKinnon and Harris' outdoor furniture includes a beautiful umpire's chair, which is central to the space. John Cullen Lighting and Bray Upholstery Design, feature throughout and some playful monogrammed accessories from Julia B. Casa sit in a bespoke Little Halstock Marquetry Box. A stunning piece of embroidered art from Victoria Bain featuring the McKinnon and Harris, and Katharine Pooley logos was created specially, paired with vintage racquets framed by the team at Patrick Ireland.

Expert advice, quality craftsmanship and top customer service from start to finish...

The project started with the stunning initial sketches and concepts above from Katharine Pooley’s team and then we had to get down to the details with a CAD drawing produced. The project manager was Naomi Pulchan who helped everyone stay on track to bring the project to completion.

The bespoke joinery was handcrafted in our sustainable workshop in Essex by our experienced team and the elements were painted in our specialist temperature and humidity-controlled paint shop.

The installation team impressed everyone on site going above and beyond to make sure the stand looked fantastic. We were delighted to receive appreciative feedback from Katharine Pooley’s team:

“On behalf of Katharine and the entire team involved, I want to express our gratitude for your hard work, dedication, and meticulous attention to detail, representing true British craftsmanship. The stand is finally complete, and the team did such a wonderful job. Thank you once again for your hard work and magnificent contributions. It's been an absolute pleasure working with the team.” - Sarah-Jane Sturgess, Katharine Pooley Design Studio.

Come and see our craftwork up-close

We pride ourselves on quality, and it is best understood when you see our work in person. Much of our bespoke work is done for customers for whom privacy is important, so it can be hard to find opportunities to see it. That’s why we are delighted to be part of WOW!House and do hope that you might be able to visit.

As Katharine Pooley says, “Immerse yourself in the visceral experience of an English garden in Summer - relax to the sound of birdsong and the gentle thwack of tennis balls through the rose scented air.”
